RUPERT, IDAHO (KMVT/KSVT) Magic Valley parents and the public can learn about the dangers of online chat rooms and prevent from their children becoming victims of online grooming.
The Rupert Police Department and Minidoka Sheriff's Office will host an internet safety class on Oct. 26.
"What we've seen happening is a massive increase in the use of technology in regards to the criminal aspect of crimes against children," said Rupert Police Department Detective Cpl. Sam Kuoha.
Kuoha has investigated internet crimes for the last four years. He said even gaming systems and phone applications can possibly allow for online predators to pose a danger to children.
"Some of the other things that we're going to be talking about is how parents can insure that their children are being safe," Kuoha continued.
"What information is important to share online or not share."
Some of the crimes are tracked to predators outside the U.S., Kuoha explained.
"I just finished a case that technologically wise took me to Czechoslovakia," he said. "We don't know where or when this is going to end."
Minidoka County Sheriff's Office Detective Dustin Bourn said there are several resources parents can do to help their children from being victimized.
"How easily this stuff is preventable by using certain apps to monitor social media accounts or monitor cell phone accounts, or just straight up communication with their child to make sure they understand what the dangers are" said Bourn."
Bourn said communication is key between the police, parents and their children.
"Us as investigators just want to make sure that we have the public partner with us to understand how they can prevent some of this stuff or how they can prevent some of this stuff or how we can get it to stop once it's discovered," said Bourn.
The class will also include how to notify law enforcement on suspicious activity.
The internet safety class will be held on Oct. 26 at the Rupert Police Department from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at their training room.
The public is encouraged to register for the class and contact the Rupert police at 208-434-2330.
